Reading’s The Gold Supply have served up a real gem in the form of their cover of the 80s classic, Don't Stand so Close to Me.

While the 1980 original by The Police had the scandalous and doom-laden undercurrent (and in ‘cough/Nabokov’ one of the most awkward-sounding rhyming couplets ever!) of a forbidden relationship between a teacher and pupil in a world of the brink of destruction, The Gold Supply take the song in a very different direction.

The sparse post-punk/reggae rhythm is augmented by flourishes of what is fast becoming The Gold Supply’s signature Krautrock and post-rock sound, while the vocal sparring of Kevin and Lena give the lyrics a new, unexpected, and somewhat melancholic slant.
